No further tightening of MCO measures for Ramadan in Penang

Malaysiakini

There will be no extra enforcement measures of the movement control order during Ramadan in the state, said Penang Deputy Chief Minister (I) Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman.
Zakiyuddin said the current rules issued by the Penang Islamic Affairs Department would continue to be implemented.
"This involves the closure of mosques and surau during the Ramadan month with no activities allowed on the premises," Zakiyuddin said.
"Therefore, there is no question of tightening the current enforcement in place for Ramadan," he added.
On the same note, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government will assist hawkers and small traders affected by the MCO during Ramadan.
Chow said the local authorities have implemented online shopping platforms and e-bazaars to help the traders.
"Maybe the platform will be able to give our hawkers a new lease of life to meet the needs of Muslims during the fasting month.
"Whether or not the MCO will be extended, I have been informed by Zakiyuddin and the Penang Islamic Religious Council that no breaking of fast would be held in mosques and surau throughout Penang," Chow said.
"This is for safety reasons to combat the Covid-19 pandemic".

Chow requested also Muslims to perform their terawih prayers in their homes.
However, charity donations for the needy and the poor will continue, he added.
Zakiyuddin and Chow's remarks come after the Penang City Council said it will study a proposal by several nasi kandar restaurant operators on the island to carry out food delivery services for pre-dawn meals (sahur) during the fasting month under the MCO.
Meanwhile, Muslims in the country were also advised to put off their Hari Raya festivities this year to a later date.
De facto Islamic affairs Minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said while festive celebrations to mark the occasion were part of the tradition, Malaysian Muslims should perform the Hari Raya prayers in the way advised by the government in light of the coronavirus pandemic. - Mkini
