Police have cast doubt over claims that a group of five who were nabbed in Labis yesterday for violating the movement control order were volunteers involved in disinfection work.
In a statement today, Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said that police found that the group had not informed nor received permission from the local council to carry out disinfection work.
Likewise, the group did not have personal protective equipment or any chemicals that could be used for disinfecting.
Ayob Khan added that the group were detained at 8.45pm when there should be no further travel on the road.
Labis MP Pang Hok Lion yesterday said the group had unintentionally violated the MCO and had been carrying out sanitisation work in Labis for two weeks.
He said they had been arrested after performing sanitation works and after police received complaints from members of the public.
Police have submitted their investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further action against the five.
Ayob Khan said while police are thankful to volunteers for their efforts, the end does not justify the means.
"Police have never stopped volunteers or NGOs from helping the government in handling the Covid-19 pandemic.
"However, they must obey existing laws and follow regulations so as not to cause confusion and misunderstanding amongst the people and troubling the authorities who are carrying out their duties," he said. - Mkini
