Prisons Dept: No prisoner with Covid-19, preventive measures taken

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | There are no confirmed Covid-19 positive inmates in Malaysian prisons, according to the Prisons Department.
The department reiterated that it is exercising a stringent approach to prevent the spread of virus within its walls.
It said that prison staff on duty must undergo screening to ensure their temperature is below 38 degrees celsius.
The department said if a staff's temperature exceeds this, he or she would be referred to medical officers.
"Aside from that, prison authorities also provide face masks and sanitizers for on-duty staff as well as inmates.
"In fact, every inmate (entering prison) would be quarantined for the purpose of health checks to prevent the disease (Covid-19) from spreading," the department said in a statement to Malaysiakini this afternoon.
"Prison authorities also take the initiative of sanitizing the entire area of the prison institution to prevent Covid-19 from spreading.
"Each inmate would be given attention and their health taken care by medical officers in prison.
"In the event an inmate shows symptoms that can be classified as Covid-19, prison authorities have prepared an isolation block and quarantine centre to isolate and prevent the disease from spreading," it added.
The department also assured families of inmates and other relevant parties that it would exercise its responsibility in corrective services.
The department was responding to allegations that there are Covid-19 positive inmates in the Sungai Buloh prison.
Yesterday, FMT reported Health Ministry director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah dismissing the allegation. - Mkini
