Probe claim Sabah immigration director scolded frontliner, says Cuepacs

Cuepacs president Adnan Mat says the Immigration Department must conduct the investigation transparently.
KOTA KINABALU: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) has called for a probe into an allegation that the Sabah immigration director had scolded a health worker who issued him a stay-at-home notice after arriving at the airport here.
Its president, Adnan Mat, said the Immigration Department must conduct the investigation transparently.
“If the incident, as claimed by a news blog, has really taken place, then Cuepacs expresses its regret over the matter as it is something that should not have been done by a government officer, let alone someone who is a state director.
“Appropriate action should be taken, after the probe is completed, to ensure public trust in the civil service is not eroded.
“Cuepacs believes such incidents do happen in the work environment of civil servants but are probably not reported out of fear they will not get the proper defence or risk of being blamed themselves,” he said in a statement today.
The news blog, apparently quoting the affected staff member, had claimed that the director had acted in a rude and unprofessional manner when told he had to undergo 14 days’ of self-quarantine after arriving at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on April 16.
In a statement today, Immigration director-general Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the department was aware of the allegation made by the portal.
Khairul said the immigration headquarters had emailed the health ministry to say that the claim is being investigated.
He said it could have been due to a misunderstanding.
“An explanation letter from the Sabah immigration director was also sent to the state health director on April 16.
“Our department respects and appreciates the commitment as well as sacrifices by health officers in fighting Covid-19. We always consider the health ministry as a strategic partner in the frontlines,” he said. -FMT
