The National Water Services Commission (Span) will reduce the annual fees for individual license holders by up to 30 percent of the firm's total income.
In a statement today, Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this will save license holders RM24 million.
Tuan Ibrahim said water companies are already facing higher financial difficulties due to lower demand for treated water and increased operating costs.
He said water companies had to pay more for chemicals because Span had ordered them to increase chlorine levels in treated water to 0.5 ppm, up from 0.2 ppm currently.
This was to meet the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations to beat the Covid-19 outbreak.
Meanwhile, Tuan Ibrahim said the Water Asset Management Company Bhd (PAAB) will postpone lease payments for three months beginning April.
He said this involves an amount of RM100 million.
"The postponement will only apply to lease for (state) water assets that have been taken over by PAAB," he said.
All water assets in Peninsular Malaysia and the federal territory of Labuan are owned by the federal government under the Water Services Industry Act 2006. - Mkini
