KOTA KINABALU: Two Pakistanis have been arrested for attempting to bribe a policeman here over alleged cigarette smuggling.
The duo offered a RM500 bribe to a police officer at the Lido area in Kepayan here at about 6.25pm Wednesday (April 22), barely 48 hours after two of their countrymen were arrested for a similar attempt in the Penampang area.
Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Karunanithy Subbaih said the duo, in their 40s, allegedly offered the bribe to the police officer as an inducement to be let off for smuggling contraband cigarettes.
“We have detained them for further questioning, ” he said when contacted.
Police will also probe the duo under the Customs Act 1967 for possession of cigarettes with unpaid duties as well as breaching the movement control order (MCO).
Karunanithy said this was the second case involving attempted bribery within a space of two daysin the state capital and the neighbouring Penampang district.
He congratulated the policemen involved for their integrity.
He said the suspects could face a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of at least RM10,000 or five times the amount of the bribe offered.
On Monday (April 20), two Pakistanis were arrested by Penampang police after they offered RM7,000 to policemen not to take action against them for allegedly smuggling some 500 cartons of contraband cigarettes. - Star
