Ex-EC secretary appointed to chief post

Malaysiakini

Former Election Commission (EC) secretary Abdul Ghani Salleh has been appointed as the commission's new head.
Abdul Ghani (above), 62, is a career civil servant who retired as the EC secretary on May 10, 2018.
He replaces Azhar Azizan Harun, who vacated the job on June 29 to take up the Dewan Rakyat speaker post.
Azhar was the first EC chairperson without a civil service background.
Meanwhile, another career civil servant, Nik Ali Mat Yunus, will replace Ramlan Ibrahim as an EC member.
After being appointed in February 2019, Ramlan, 63, decided to resign on Aug 1.
The Federal Constitution requires the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint the EC chairperson, deputy chairperson and five members.
Under Article 114 (3), the executive is unable to arbitrarily remove a member of the EC except by means of a tribunal.
The current EC line-up is as follows:
Chairperson: Abdul Ghani Salleh (former civil servant)
Deputy chairperson: Azmi Sharom (former academic)
Members: Nik Ali Mat Yunus (former civil servant)
Chin Paik Yoong (former civil servant)
Faisal S Hazis (former academic)
Zoe Randhawa (former activist)
Awang Sahari EM Nadzeer (former police personnel) - Mkini
