Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says the ministry is probing claims that Industry, Plantation and Commodities Minister Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali breached quarantine orders after returning from abroad.
Noor Hisham told Malaysiakini that Khairuddin (above) was tested for Covid-19 at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport upon arrival last month.
“We are investigating. It was the period of home quarantine then.
“If (he) tested positive, (he) will be admitted to hospital and if (he) tested negative, (he needs to undergo) mandatory home quarantine for 14 days,” the top health official said when contacted.
Yesterday, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok told the Dewan Rakyat that Khairuddin had returned from Turkey on July 7 after spending four days there.
He was present in Parliament six days later on July 13 - before the end of his home quarantine period.
Khairuddin has yet to respond to repeated requests for comment.
Today, a source reportedly close to the minister told several newspapers that he underwent a “special Covid-19 test” upon his return and was found negative for the virus. The source also claimed Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had approved the Turkey trip as it was a “green zone”.
However, between July 3 and 7, which were the alleged dates of Khairuddin’s trip, Turkey registered more than 5,600 new cases and 93 deaths. The country has since registered more than 250,000 Covid-19 cases and a total of 6,061 deaths from the virus.
Several MPs have since demanded an explanation from the cabinet minister and called for action to be taken against him.
Last week, an elderly woman was jailed one day and fined RM8,000 after pleading guilty to breaching her home quarantine by dining out.
A restaurant owner linked to the Sivagangga cluster was sentenced to five months’ jail and fined RM12,000 for violating the home quarantine requirement. - Mkini
