PETALING JAYA: Two letters stating that PAS has agreed to be part of Perikatan Nasional as a coalition once it is registered under the Registrar of Societies (ROS) is fake, says the Islamist party.
The letter, which was circulated on social media with the party letterhead, allegedly stated that PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had agreed for PAS to be part of Perikatan when it is registered legally under the ROS.
"I have checked with the president's office and there is no such letter signed by him. PAS has not agreed to be part of Perikatan's pro-tem committee," said PAS central information chief Mohd Shahir Abu Hassan when contacted on Sunday (Aug 9).
The letter also stated that Hadi had allegedly agreed to name secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan and vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as pro-tem committee members representing PAS in Perikatan once it is registered.
Takiyuddin is Minister in the Prime Minister's Department holding the parliament and law portfolios, while Samsuri is Terengganu Mentri Besar.
Another similar letter replaced the names of Takiyuddin and Samsuri with that of PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and another PAS leader Datuk Khairuddin Takiri.
Tuan Ibrahim is the Environment Minister while Khairuddin is the Plantation and Commodities Minister.
The Perikatan government led by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has yet to be registered officially under ROS.
Perikatan leaders had said that the registration is in the works but "parties within have yet to work out some matters".
A source said the letters were likely written to drive a wedge between PAS and its Muafakat Nasional ally Umno.
On July 30, Umno said that it will not join Perikatan but it will remain friendly to Perikatan as part of the government.
PAS has yet to announce whether it will be part of Perikatan but has steadfastly said it supports Umno and remains in Muafakat Nasional, a loose cooperation between the two parties. - Star
