Ku Li urges Umno to quit cabinet over Bersatu's multiracial move

Malaysiakini

The head of Umno's advisory board Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has urged the party's ministers to withdraw from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's cabinet.
This is because of Bersatu's decision to open its doors to non-Malay members.
"Bersatu... is no longer qualified to be in a Malay-Muslim pact supported by Muafakat Nasional," the veteran politician said in a statement this evening.
Muhyiddin is the president of Bersatu. He had formed an alliance with Umno after pulling out his party from the Pakatan Harapan coalition, which resulted in the collapse of the previous government.
On Sunday, Muhyiddin had announced that he intends to explore ways to turn Bersatu into a multiracial platform.

Formed in 2017 as a party exclusive for bumiputera, it currently only accepts non-bumiputera as associate members without any voting rights.

The idea to pivot came about following the entry of PKR defector Azmin Ali and his followers into Bersatu on Sunday.

Azmin's followers include a considerable number of non-bumiputera.

Razaleigh said Bersatu's change of direction meant that Umno could no longer be part of the cabinet and hinted that fresh elections should be called.

"(Resigning) should be done immediately because we do not want to waste time.

"We should focus on the youth who are having difficulty finding jobs because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Moreover, a matter as serious as this should be brought to the upcoming national party delegates meeting," he added. - Mkini
