'Last minute' weddings as Klang sub-district enters conditional MCO

Nur Emira Khaleeda Abdul Rahman, 24, had high hopes that her wedding day -initially planned for tomorrow - would go off without a hitch.

Little did she know that a conditional movement control order effective today would throw off course not only her own plans but also that of many other couples within the affected Klang sub-district.

Nur Emira told Malaysiakini things took a frantic turn yesterday after she received a call from the Klang District Islamic Office informing her that no weddings could be held this weekend.

"I was supposed to get married on Oct 10, but the Islamic office called and asked me to perform it on Oct 8, which was yesterday.

"Just imagine, I was at work and I got a call to go home and get ready to get married. And there were many of us (couples) at the Islamic office, the 'last-minute' wedding gang," she told Malaysiakini today.

She said the Klang Islamic office had asked for the weddings to be held yesterday since it could not carry out marriage ceremonies during the conditional MCO period.

"Their office is under the Klang sub-district and I live in Kapar sub-district but because since there is no one in Kapar to perform the marriage ceremony, so I had to go there.

"If we didn't get married yesterday, they told us to make a new application in Shah Alam but that process is more complicated because it is outside our district," she added.

As a result, the accounts clerk said her husband's family members also had to rush to Klang from Kedah for their wedding.

"It was chaotic because my mother-in-law had yet to arrive [...] just imagine my family needing to rush for this sudden wedding.

"I was supposed to be married on Saturday and the reception held the same night but I did not get to hold the reception," she said.

"I'm lucky that the wedding planner, make-up artist and henna artist were understanding and they allowed us to change the date," she added.

Nur Emira, however, expressed gratefulness that they managed to overcome the chaos and it all ended well.

"My husband had to buy new shoes right before the wedding [...] but Alhamdulillah everything went well and we are now married," she said. - Mkini
