Mahdzir quarantined, unable to testify at Rosmah’s corruption trial

ROSMAH TRIAL | Former education minister Mahdzir Khalid was unable to testify at Rosmah Mansor’s corruption trial involving the Sarawak solar hybrid energy project, the Kuala Lumpur High Court heard today.

Lead DPP Gopal Sri Ram informed High Court judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan that this was due to Mahdzir undergoing quarantine until Oct 12.

Mahdzir (above), who previously testified for the prosecution, was initially supposed to attend proceedings today to give further testimony.

However, Sri Ram had then sought for Mahdzir to instead come to court on Oct 13 at 2pm.

Mahdzir was among several political figures who took part in the campaigning at the Sabah state polls last month.

After coming back from Sabah, he underwent Covid-19 screening for the third time on Oct 7.

It was reported that several political figures who partook in the campaigning were later found positive with Covid-19, including BN candidate for Pitas, Sufian Abd Karim and Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan.

Meanwhile, several other political figures, such as former premier Najib Abdul Razak, have since then undergone self-quarantine as precautionary measures against Covid-19.

Proceedings before Zaini today then resumed with testimony from another prosecution witness, MACC investigating officer Noornabilah Mohd Aziman.

Previously in August, it was reported that Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd’s former business partner Rayyan Radzwill Abdullah testified that then education minister Mahdzir allegedly had wanted RM60 million from the company, in order to greenlight the RM1.25 billion project involving 369 rural schools in Sarawak.

However, that testimony clashed with the denial from Mahdzir while on the witness stand as a prosecution witness against Rosmah, the wife of Najib.

During proceedings before Zaini today, Noornabilah read out from a prepared witness statement.

The trial resumes around 9am tomorrow.

Rosmah is on trial over three charges on alleged misappropriation of funds for the supply and installation of solar energy panels at 369 rural schools in Sarawak for the Education Ministry.

She faces one count of allegedly soliciting RM187.5 million and two charges of purportedly receiving a bribe of RM6.5 million from Jepak Holdings managing director Saidi Abang Samsudin as a reward for helping the company secure the RM1.25 billion project obtained through direct negotiations with the ministry. - Mkini
