PBB tells Umno not to create political uncertainty

KUCHING: Umno should not create political uncertainty by reconsidering its support for the Perikatan Nasional government, says a Sarawak leader.

PBB vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this was not the time to play politics when the country was still grappling with Covid-19.

"We are at a stage where we are facing a global crisis, which is the pandemic. We know how the present Perikatan government came in, it was quite chaotic in February and March.

"Umno should have some feelings for the nation. There is no need to jeopardise the situation again," he said after announcing the inaugural Sarawak Music Awards ceremony here on Wednesday (Oct 14).

He was commenting on Umno's announcement on Tuesday (Oct 13) night that the party would set new terms for continuing its political cooperation with Perikatan through a written agreement.

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said Umno would consider withdrawing support for Perikatan if the conditions were not met.

Karim said any political announcements by leaders such as those from Umno or Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would create uncertainty.

"To Umno, there is no need at this time to play politics. The same goes for Anwar.

"It's not good when there is uncertainty. It repulses foreign investors from coming in.

"There is no need to create more uncertainty. Put aside politics," he said.

Karim added that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his Cabinet were trying their best to handle Covid-19 and its economic impact.

"Presently, I believe that in Sarawak, we are happy with the present administration.

"The Prime Minister has done his best to look after the economy of the nation. It's not easy to tackle Covid-19 and Malaysia has done pretty well in addressing this problem," he said.

He noted that the current spike in cases was partly due to the recent Sabah state elections.

"We have learnt a big lesson from Sabah, which is that if we are going to an election, we have to be a lot more careful," he said. - Star
