PBS sits out of Batu Sapi polls

Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will sit out of the Batu Sapi polls for the first time since the seat was created in 2004.

In a statement today, party president Maximus Ongkili said the party's political bureau had decided on this due to the worsening Covid-19 outbreak in Sabah.

He said that the safety of the Batu Sapi people and those in neighbouring Sandakan should be the foremost consideration at this time.

However, Ongkili did not rule out the possibility that the fledgling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) would still field a candidate.

"Although it is not immediately known if other partners in GRS will be contesting, Ongkili said that he has informed Perikatan Nasional (PN) president and GRS chief Muhyiddin Yassin that the party will support and assist any eventual PN plus candidate and ensure a win in the Batu Sapi by-election," he added.

Batu Sapi was represented by PBS when it was part of the BN coalition between 2004 and 2018.

The seat was won by Warisan's Liew Vui Keong during the 2018 elections. Liew passed away on Oct 2.

Elections are slated for Dec 5, but no party has thus far indicated that they would be fielding a candidate.

Some parties have proposed that Warisan be given a walkover in Batu Sapi. - Mkini
