KEPALA BATAS: Two brothers stole a police patrol car last night to impress a girlfriend then drove from Seberang Perai Utara to Shah Alam, police said.

The brothers and the woman, a girlfriend of one brother, have been arrested.

The Honda Civic 1.8S patrol vehicle was taken from Seberang Perai Utara district police headquarters here last night and the vehicle was found in Shah Alam, Selangor, early today.

A police source said the two men, aged 28 and 32, fled with the vehicle after claiming they were members of the police Information Technology Resource division who were there to check on the dashboard camera in the car.

“Everything happened so fast and within minutes the men were out of the compound, without raising any suspicion,” he told Bernama today.

He said the supervisor (a policeman with the rank of sergeant), only realised the vehicle was stolen half an hour later when the two men did not return and could not be contacted.

The vehicle was found several hours later in Shah Alam, Selangor, and police managed to arrest a male suspect as well as a woman in her 20s, believed to be his girlfriend, who were in the car.

Following the arrest, another man, the younger brother, was detained in Tasek Gelugor early this morning.

“Investigations found that the suspect had initially picked up his girlfriend in Tasek Gelugor, and it is believed the couple had made an attempt to rob a grocery shop before driving to Shah Alam,” he said.

Police investigations also found that the main suspect had been arrested on Oct 15 for stealing electrical cables and both brothers have past criminal records including drug convictions.

District police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor when contacted confirmed the incident adding that investigations were ongoing. - FMT
