Social media users start #protestdarurat against Emergency

#protestdarurat posters have been pasted at several locations in Kuala Lumpur.

PETALING JAYA: Social media today has been flooded with the #protestdarurat hashtag, after widespread speculation about the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government’s intentions over a proposed state of emergency to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pictures were posted on Twitter showing #protestdarurat posters at various locations such as around the Kuala Lumpur court complex and LRT stations.

Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil of PKR tweeted the hashtag, and urged Malaysians to stay at home and adhere to the health ministry regulations.

Social activist Marina Mahathir tweeted #protestdarurat, in questioning women representatives in the PN government.

Former PPBM Youth information chief Ulya Aqamah Husamuddin meanwhile said “dont call for emergency, call out incompetency!”.

Electoral watchdog, Bersih 2.0 said the reasoning for an emergency declaration, that of fighting Covid-19, was unnecessary and undemocratic.

However, former prime minister Najib Razak said those who wanted to put up #protestdarurat posters should not do it on public signboards.

“If you want to protest, don’t paste it on public signboards. How are others supposed to read (the signboard)? I know some of you are angry but please paste it somewhere else or use another avenue to protest,” he said on Facebook.

Earlier today, Istana Negara said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, is to meet Malay rulers to discuss proposals from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Cabinet. Muhyiddin and several ministers had an audience with the King on Friday, after a special Cabinet meeting. - FMT
