Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz has backed calls for Umno to leave Perikatan Nasional (PN) and not cede any ground to them in the 15th general election (GE15).
However, he said, for now, the current government must continue to be supported in the fight against Covid-19.
"Right now we support the government to fight Covid-19. The health of the public is important so we have to support (the government) now.
"But we are only with PN in government (not in the general election)," he told Malaysiakini.
Umno leaders are resentful towards Bersatu having ceded the Sabah chief minister's position to the latter following the Sabah state election.
The party had also given up strongholds that it had originally won in 2018 to those who had defected to Bersatu.
Nazri said what had happened in Sabah would also likely happen in GE15 if Umno stuck with PN.
"The Bersatu seats used to be Umno seats.
"Come GE15, we might have to concede all these seats to Bersatu and this will not benefit Umno," he added.
At present, 15 of Bersatu's MPs had originally been elected on an Umno-BN ticket in 2018 before they defected.
Umno has said that it wants to contest all the seats it previously won in the 2018 polls.
Bersatu has a smaller support base than Umno and has already been fractured after former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was expelled from the party.
Mahathir, who founded Bersatu, warned the party could be wiped out if it contests against Umno and the current opposition in the next general election. - Mkini
