The Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department has set up three community firefighting squads involving the Orang Asli in a move to equip the indigenous community with rescuing capabilities during an emergency.
The Department director, Md Salleh Sarbini, said two of the squads were set up at Pos Brooke and the other at Pos Hendrop.
He said members of the squads, involving 32 Orang Asli, will be given adequate firefighting training.
This is to enable them to be first responders in firefighting operations before the arrival of fire teams from Fire and Rescue stations, he said.
The squads are needed especially in Orang Asli villages which are far away from the town areas, he added.
Salleh was speaking to reporters after attending a Public Awareness and Safety Campaign programme with the Orang Asli community at Pos Brooke, Gua Musang, today.
He also said there were plans to build a Fire and Rescue station in the Orang Asli settlement.
