Umno No 2: Don't put a strain on democracy

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the Covid-19 crisis must be handled in a way which respects the Federal Constitution and democracy is allowed to function normally.

In a statement today, he said Malaysia's response to the crisis so far was praiseworthy and the country was on the road to recovery.

"Any action which ignores science negatively affects the economy and disregards the role of the constitution will place the country and her people in more complications, worsening the situation.

"This crisis must be handled by defending the constitution, allowing democracy to function, improving the health system, public safety and prioritising the interest of the people, not making it more difficult," said Mohamad.

These remarks came at a time when there is the uncertainty caused by Putrajaya's purported plan to declare a state of emergency, which could possibly include suspending Parliament.

Mohamad's statement does not mention "emergency" at all but mentions "constitution" four times.

Mohamad said while the country's health systems were being challenged now, it has received praise and has shown that the government can act appropriately and scientifically, taking good care of the public.

"Malaysia is not in a situation where its economy, health systems and public order have collapsed. We are in a focused recovery phase.

"The public is affected by (the Covid-19) crisis, and they are abiding with the necessary health protocols. Moreover, the people of Malaysia are working hard in their jobs and businesses," he said.

Mohamad, a state lawmaker in Negeri Sembilan, has been very vocal on federal government policies since the Perikatan Nasional government formed in March. - Mkini
