Umno postpones AGMs till mid-2021

Umno has resolved to postpone its annual national delegates conference and divisional meetings due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The decision to postpone these events was made unanimously by the party's management committee after obtaining written consent from the majority of the supreme council members.

"The postponement will involve 764 meetings - four meetings for each other 191 Umno divisions throughout the country.

"As these meetings will involve tens of thousands of people, it may cause the spread of Covid-19," said party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Under the party rules, the national delegates and divisional levels must hold annual general meetings not later than 18 months from the previous meeting.

The last time a national delegates' conference was held was on Dec 7, 2019.

Ahmad (photo) said the goal now was to hold divisional level meetings in March and April next year, followed by the national delegates conference in May or early June.

Now that the meetings for this year have been cancelled, he urged grassroots to focus on welfare activities in the respective areas.

Umno's national delegates assembly - the party's highest decision-making body - for this year was a highly anticipated event because it would be the first since Umno returned to power.

Moreover, there have been grumblings among party grassroots over the party's position in Perikatan Nasional and the meeting this year was expected to build up to the party's election scheduled for end-2021. - Mkini
