Due to the alarming increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has called on political parties to halt hostilities for now.
He said the pandemic has led to suffering among the people, with some becoming destitute due to the loss of income.
“The time has come for politicians, regardless of parties, to observe a ceasefire to think of the best solution for the people.
“Perhaps this is the best moment to set aside our differences to focus on the 'National Reconciliation Agenda',” he added in a statement this evening.
Aysraf clarified that the agenda does not mean the dilution of respective political ideologies but rather to postpone the bitter conflict with regard to the ongoing power struggle.
He said the agenda is aimed at pooling resources to discover the best formula to assist the people.
To ensure its success, Aysraf said, there must be political will, political commitment and political sincerity amongst all parties.
He also warned politicians regarding the prospect of being punished by the people over the never-ending political discord.
Apart from the pandemic, Malaysians have also witnessed a protracted political tussle over the past several months, which started in the form of the “Sheraton Move” in February.
The political coup led to the demise of the Pakatan Harapan government after just 22 months in power and the birth of a new ruling alliance called Perikatan Nasional comprising Bersatu, Umno-BN, and supported by GPS as well as others.
However, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's nascent administration has been facing internal and external threats.
Last month, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim declared that he had secured a solid majority to form the government.
Following this, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed that many of his party lawmakers are backing Anwar.
In the aftermath of Anwar's audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Oct 13, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan dropped a bombshell when he announced that his party is mulling withdrawing its support for the PN government.
He added that Umno would renegotiate the terms with the government.
It appears that Umno is flexing its muscles to force Muhyiddin into making certain concessions to its benefit.
Umno is expected to present its new terms and conditions to the premier after its supreme council meeting tomorrow. - Mkini
