Volunteers, funding, medical equipment needed to fight Covid-19: Sabah MMA

The Sabah chapter of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has initiated a donation campaign to supply healthcare equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontliners there.

This came as demands for medical facilities and equipment increased following the surge in coronavirus cases in Sabah with over 5,000 cases and 43 deaths as of yesterday.

Since Oct 10, all Covid-19 fatalities have been in the Borneo state.

It was reported yesterday that more than half of the intensive care unit (ICU) beds allocated for Covid-19 patients in Sabah hospitals have been filled while 71 percent of regular beds were occupied.

Taking to social media, senior consultant paediatrician Dr Amar Singh HSS said Sabah MMA was seeking donations for PPE as well as various medical equipment.

The public can channel their donations to the United Overseas Bank (account number: 1063057741).

Beside PPE and healthcare equipment, the donations will also be used for medical supplies and other related Covid-19 reliefs.

Meanwhile, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has uploaded application forms for the public to sign up as non-Health Ministry volunteers.

On Oct 12, Noor Hisham had reiterated his call for volunteers and NGOs to help fight the Covid-19 battle in Sabah.

Dr Adham Baba

In a statement today, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba assured the public that the government will continue to increase its preparedness for Covid-19.

This includes increasing testing capacity to 54,706 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests per day, compared to the current capacity of just over 41,000 per day.

The ministry has maximised the capacity of its Covid-19 laboratories where 43,706 RT-PCR tests were carried out on a daily basis, he said.

This involved the collaboration of all 61 laboratories under the ministry, armed forces and universities together with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, he added.

Adham also informed that the laboratories' capacity has increased to 42 percent as of yesterday.

A total of 2,500 tests were conducted in Sabah, mainly at the Kota Kinabalu Public Health Laboratory, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The remaining samples will be sent to the peninsula with the help of the air force, added Adham.

He also expected the health clinic in Tawau Kubota, which is being equipped to conduct RT-PCR tests, will be operational soon. - Mkini
