MIRI: A woman whose husband died on board a ship that collided with an oil rig last Tuesday is demanding an explanation for what she called an act of negligence by the ship’s management.

Nateshwari Dhusan, the widow of Aaron Michael Rajasgara, one of two persons who died in the accident, told The Borneo Post that she felt hopeless and wanted answers about what had happened.

“What were the captain, chief mate and second mate doing? What were the deck crew doing?“ she asked.

Aaron, 34, who is from Negeri Sembilan, and Sarawakian Thomas Liang, 39, drowned after they jumped into the sea with 125 other offshore workers after their ship struck the rig when its anchor wire broke off during bad weather. A survivor explained they were ordered to jump off as they feared there had been an explosion. There were 187 people on the ship.

Nateshwari said she was lost as to how she was going to support their two young children, aged eight and five. “He (Aaron) was the breadwinner,” she said.

She also wanted her husband’s body to be flown home to Negeri Sembilan soon.

“Now I am waiting and hoping to get him back on Friday or Saturday, hopefully they can speed up the process,” she said, adding that her late husband’s death certificate could not be released as the National Registration Department office was closed today.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Mohd Zubil Mat said based on initial information, it was suspected that one of the Dayang Topaz’s anchors had been cut off due to bad weather conditions, causing the ship to lose control and drift off the platform before crashing into the Baram B oil platform. - FMT
