All Perak Umno reps support Saarani as MB

A total of 26 Perak assemblypersons have signed a statutory declaration (SD) to support Perak Umno liaison chief Saarani Mohamad as the new menteri besar.

Sinar Harian quoted a source as saying that the support came from all 25 Umno assemblypersons and one from Bersatu.

The report said that the number grew from an initial 15 Umno assemblypersons declaring their support through the SD.

A simple majority to form the state government requires 30 seats.

Following the ouster of Bersatu's menteri besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu and his state administration, PAS said it would not be involved in efforts to form a new Perak government.

"If we get another four Bersatu assemblypersons including (former MB) Faizal to support (Saarani), it will be enough just for Umno and Bersatu to form the state government.

"However, the Perak Sultan surely wants to see a stable government. Therefore, PAS has to expedite its decision (whether to support Umno or not)," the source said.

The political crisis in Perak began after Faizal was removed from the state's top post via a confidence vote in the state assembly sitting last Friday.

During the vote, 24 out of 25 Umno assemblypersons joined another 24 opposition Pakatan Harapan assemblypersons to vote against him, causing him to lose his majority support. Only 10 state representatives backed the Chenderiang assemblyperson.

A source told Malaysiakini that a Perak Umno meeting had decided to nominate Saarani, who is the Kota Tampan assemblyperson, as Faizal's successor.

In a turn of events, Perak Umno had negotiated with opposition parties DAP, PKR, and Amanah to form a state government - a move which opened the possible alliance to mixed criticism from all sides, notably from Umno and DAP supporters.

Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming, in an open letter written in Chinese, explained that if the alliance materialises, he would abstain from taking any position in the state government. - Mkini
