Azis reveals Warisan mulls Peninsular expansion, hints at 'something big'

Warisan Youth chief Mohd Azis Jamman today revealed his party is mulling to expand its wings to Peninsular Malaysia to become a full-fledged national party.

Officiating the annual general assembly of the party's wings, Azis said "something big" was about to happen.

He added that people in Peninsular Malaysia, including some MPs, have also expressed interest in the party.

"The way forward for Malaysia is unity, and unity is what we need to expand to the national level, including Peninsular Malaysia.

"This matter will be brought to the party's national conference for consideration so that the unity we championed in the last election can also be brought to Peninsular Malaysia because the way forward for Malaysia is unity," he told delegates who tuned in virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Azis also noted that some are ambivalent about a Sabah-based party expanding nationally, pointing out that none others have done so.

He added that PBS, which is now part of the Perikatan Nasional government, previously tried to do so but eventually abandoned the plan.

"But we will never know if we do not try," he said.

Azis said Warisan's leadership style has not only attracted Sabahans but also supporters from West Malaysia.

"There are even MPs from the other side that have expressed interest to stand with us in promoting unity in Peninsular Malaysia," he said.

Azis also hinted at the possibility of new political developments, describing the Perikatan government as a leaking ship and urging supporters to patiently wait for a new ship to board.

'Something big'

Warisan was founded by its president Shafie Apdal in 2016 after Umno punished him for questioning then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak over the 1MDB scandal, which the latter is now standing trial.

Within two years, Shafie led Warisan to power in Sabah. However, Warisan was ousted from power in the state election in September after it couldn't make further inroads and its partner Upko failed to deliver the Kadazan-Dusun-Murut vote.

Since then, Azis claimed many from PN had tried to entice Warisan MPs, but they have rebuffed such offers.

"We can choose to board a leaking ship. But in the end, it will sink.

"Or, we can wait for a while and swim for a bit because we know, straight ahead, there will be a ship that we can board which will be a more stable government than today's," he said.

"Something big is going to happen very soon," he added.

DAP and Amanah had previously mulled Shafie as a possible prime ministerial candidate to unite the opposition.

This was to break the deadlock between PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and Pejuang pro-tem chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

However, the proposal was rejected by PKR.
