Cyclists are advised to choose "suitable" places and venues, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department head Azisman Alias said.
"We advise those who wish to cycle to choose a location and time that are appropriate and not at rush hour traffic," he said.
He said cycling on public roads can interfere with traffic flows and lead to accident risks.
Azisman said he recognised that cycling was a "new trend".
He noted that in 2019, there were 201 bicycle-related accidents involving 107 fatalities, 35 serious injuries and 59 light injuries.
As of October this year, there were 137 accidents involving 56 fatalities, 18 serious injuries and 63 light injuries.
He warned that cyclists who disobey the law can be fined under the Road Transport Act 1987, citing provisions such as Section 54(1) for "reckless" riding, Section 79(2) for failing to obey traffic signs and cycling on the highway, and Section 112(3) that allows the seizure of bicycles.
Azisman also cited Road Traffic Rules 1959, which made it a rule for cyclists to attach lights, brakes and bells to their vehicles. The rules also state that cyclists are not allowed to ride abreast. - Mkini
