Faizal is fourth chief executive to fail confidence vote

Ahmad Faizal Azumu will go down in history as the fourth chief executive of a state or territory in the country to be ousted through a confidence vote.

Faizal was voted out as menteri besar today by 48 of 59 Perak assemblypersons, through a motion initiated by a lawmaker from an allied party.

In 1966, Stephen Kalong Ningkan was ousted as chief minister by the Sarawak Council Negri, which predates the current Sarawak legislative assembly.

The federal government had imposed emergency rule on Sarawak at the time to allow the governor, and not the chief minister, to convene a Council Negri sitting, which eventually ousted Stephen.

In 1976, Harun Idris was ousted by fellow BN lawmakers as the Selangor menteri besar through a similar manner.

At the time Harun was fighting corruption charges and was eventually convicted.

In 1977, Muhamed Nasir was ousted by fellow PAS lawmakers as the Kelantan menteri besar.

PAS had contested under the BN banner for the first time in 1974. By 1977, PAS lawmakers no longer favoured Mohamed on grounds that he was favoured by BN.

Muhamed's ouster led to riots in Kota Bharu and an emergency was declared. - Mkini
