JOHOR BARU: Malaysia does not need more coalitions that is merely a survival strategy to gain support from the largest political party and not from the people, says Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
“Previously, we have formed the Perikatan Nasional government with the cooperation among MPs although it was not a reflection of the people’s choice.
“The act has failed to provide the political stability that was hoped for. What are the guarantees that more coalitions would bring the political stability that Malaysia needs,” he said.
He added that Malaysia is in immediate need of a strong government that has the real mandate from the people.
“Bersatu needs to stop being nostalgic about old stories of their sacrifices to save the country.
“All the rhetoric is clearly just an easy way to ‘save’ their own party to remain in power.
“We need to have a government from the people, by the people and for the people,” he said in a statement here on Friday (Dec 11).
He said this in response to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin’s proposal to establish a grand coalition between Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
Khaled said that the grand coalition between the three parties must have a clear purpose and end goal.
“Perikatan, Barisan and GPS must build its strength through getting votes and mandate from the people. The real strength of the government comes from the grassroots and the people, which is gained through a general election.
“In countries with advanced democracy, the establishment of a political coalition will only take place when the largest political party does not have enough seats to effectively run the country and this is normally done through an election, ” he said.
Earlier, Hamzah said Perikatan, Barisan and GPS should ink a formal charter of political understanding before the 15th General Election.
He said that with the signing of a charter, the people would be confident that the Perikatan coalition was politically stable and capable of governing the country.
He suggested that the three entities would make up a grand coalition that would ensure that Perikatan continued ruling in the next term and took over the Opposition states. - Star
