KUALA LUMPUR: Petaling Jaya member of parliament Maria Chin Abdullah was ordered to show cause for contempt over her criticism of the Syariah High Court's decision to jail an ex-wife of a businessman.

This was after Syariah Court of Appeal dismissed her application for extension of time to challenge a High Court order to begin contempt proceedings against her.

The committal proceeding was applied for by businessman Datuk SM Faisal SM Nasimuddin following Maria's comment which criticised a jail sentence against his ex-wife Emilia Hanafi.

The decision was made by a three-men Shariah Court of Appeal judges - Othman Ibrahim, Datuk Mohamad Shakir Abdul Hamid, and Mohd Amran Mat Zain who led the trio.

Counsel Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader who represented SM Faisal when contacted said the court had ordered Maria to show cause as soon as possible.

Akberdin said the court also ordered Maria to pay RM6,000 in costs to his client.

Counsel Nurul Hafidzah Hassan and Mkhd Hafizal Parcho represented Maria.

On Sept 4, Emilia was sentenced to seven days jail by the Syariah High Court when she unilaterally rescheduled visitation dates for her children to be with their father (SM Faisal).

However, she was out on RM5,000 bail pending her appeal.

It was reported that Maria, on the next day, issued a statement which reportedly said the shariah legal system was still discriminatory against Muslim women.
