Nur Jazlan's views on Umno working with DAP are his own opinion, says Khaled Nordin

PETALING JAYA: Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed's statement that "Umno may ditch Perikatan Nasional and tie up with DAP" is not the voice of the party, says party vice president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The former Johor Mentri Besar said that it is the personal view of one man.

"That is his own personal view," said Khaled when contacted on Saturday (Dec 12).

He was asked to comment on a statement by Nur Jazlan to a news portal that Umno stood to pay a heavy price if it stayed in the ruling coalition and allowed a “weak” Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to take the lead at the polls.

In the report, Nur Jazlan said there was “simmering frustration” among Umno members against Bersatu's attempts to impose itself as a dominant force in the Perikatan Nasional government.

The same portal quoted the former Pulai MP as saying that "a tie-up between Umno and PKR as well as DAP may not be a bad idea” as Malaysia needed a more racially-representative government to advance and attain global recognition as a progressive nation.

“Having a government which is more than 90% Malay is not healthy or good for the country. We cannot sideline the non-Malays when it comes to positions in the government, ” he said in urging Umno members to give this “Pakatan Harapan option” some thought.

The issue of Umno joining hands with DAP was first brought up by Perak Umno after the ousting of former Perak MB Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu of Bersatu on Dec 4.

Umno and its counterpart Bersatu then ironed out their differences and returned to endorse Umno with a new Perikatan government under Umno's Datuk Saarani Mohamad, as appointed by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah on Dec 10. - Star
