PKR still confident Anwar can produce the numbers via SDs or in Parliament

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has expressed confidence that party president Anwar Ibrahim can still produce the numbers needed to form a new government.

He said this could be done either via statutory declarations (SDs) or in the Dewan Rakyat.

Speaking to Sinar Harian, Saifuddin said Anwar would have kept the top Pakatan Harapan leadership in the loop on his progress.

"I am not ready to share the number (of SDs). I know who we've met, and how many we have and so on.

"Knowing how Anwar carries out his responsibilities, he will always update on progress towards his efforts to the top Harapan leadership," he said.

Meanwhile, he told Utusan Malaysia yesterday that efforts to oust Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in the Dewan Rakyat would continue once the Lower House reconvenes in March.

Previously, Umno's Ketereh MP Annuar Musa claimed that there were ongoing efforts in the party to secure SDs supporting Anwar.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak had also lobbied for BN to support the PKR president in October.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, however, have urged Harapan to forget about securing defections from government backbenchers.

They said none of those who supposedly supported Anwar had sided with the opposition during Tuesday's budget vote.

Commenting on this, Saifuddin said the PKR president had been given the mandate to try and secure numbers to form the government and he should not be blamed for doing so.

"I strongly deny that this is Anwar's private effort. Harapan had nominated Anwar (as opposition leader) to retake the mandate (for government).

"It is not a sin for someone who was nominated to make such efforts," he told Sinar Harian.

However, he did not view Lim and Mohamad's remarks as adding pressure to Anwar, and that it did not threaten Harapan's stability. - Mkini
