BATU KAWAN: The Penang Development Corporation (PDC) said initial investigation into the collapse of Batu Kawan Bridge’s Pier 2 suggests that the remaining piers are intact.
It said checks by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Penang showed that the failure of the soft clay layer below the bridge resulted in soil movement of the entire temporary platform.
PDC’s chief executive officer, Mohd Bazid Abdul Kahar, said a complete report will be ready within two weeks.
He said the remaining structure will be monitored to ensure that it was safe to use.
Pier 2 of the bridge was reported to have collapsed in mid-November, moving five to six metres from its original position.
It was one of four key piers that would see the expansion of the Batu Kawan Bridge from two lanes to six in the coming year. - FMT
