KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government will look into several aspects to further improve the situation at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park near here.

In a working visit here yesterday, State Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the issues include shortage of staff looking after the elephants.

"For now, there are 14 elephants which are being taken care of by six staff only.

"According to the standard of care guidelines by Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria, an elephant should be cared for by two personnel," he said in a statement.

He also said the infrastructure for the aviary, reptile houses and clinic are in dire need of maintenance.

The aviary used to be the main attraction for the park, where visitors were allowed to walk around the area. However, it had to be closed due to severe damage.

"The park is still finalising the cost to repair the aviary from the Public Works Department. I am hoping the department would reduce the bureaucracy to expedite the project.

"Apart from that, we also want to build fencing around the park to prevent a similar incident in August, when a clouded leopard escaped from its captivity," he said, adding that it is also to safeguard the safety of the villagers nearby. - NST
