Tuaran MP tries to slash budget again, takes aim at Zuraida

Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau has filed two motions in the Dewan Rakyat aimed at the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

According to his motions, the Tuaran MP is seeking to defund the ministry's Penggerak Komuniti Tempatan (PeKT) programme and reallocate the sum to Universiti Malaya Sabah (UMS).

Under the Federal Government Expenditure 2021, RM8,627,200 has been allocated for PeKT for "grants and fixed charges". They were not funded under "emoluments" or "supply and services".

According to the Accountant-General's Department's definition, "grants and fixed charges" are for scholarships, gifts, aid, interest, dividends, debt payments, pensions, insurance claims and general claims.

Little is known about the purpose of PeKT.

The ministry told the Dewan Rakyat last month that PeKT had 261 operatives, or "activists", this year in Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan - the only three states held by Pakatan Harapan.

The purpose of these activists was disseminating information on the ministry's activities.

Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari had gone on record that Selangor alone intends to have 288 PeKT activists eventually. They will be paid RM2,000 a month for their services.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry is headed by Zuraida Kamaruddin, who is Abdul Rashid's fellow party member.

This is the second batch of motions filed by Wilfred since the two motions to slash RM20 million from the International Trade and Industry Ministry's Apec budget.

The Dewan Rakyat speaker rejected that motion on the grounds that it was not submitted in time - two days ahead.

The Dewan Rakyat speaker's office will be hard-pressed to deny Wilfred this time because his motions were filed on Dec 4 and the Housing and Local Government Ministry's turn to have its budget debated falls on Dec 8. - Mkini
