KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is expected to hire an additional 8,000 personnel which will be absorbed under the Welfare Department next year.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun said the new staff will be hired on contract was part of the ministry's restructuring plan.
She said the ministry needs more personnel to ramp up the services it provides to the people.
"Currently, there are less than 8,000 employees in the ministry. Of the total, 6,000 workers are under the (welfare) department.
"The number of workers in the ministry is still low to accommodate the services needed for the country's 32 million population. We do not have enough volunteers and we still require more.
"At the same time, we are also providing job opportunities for the people," she told reporters after handing over basic necessities to Kampung Keramat flash floods victims here yesterday.
About 30 households in that area were affected by the flash floods.
She said that the Finance Ministry was also aiming to provide some 50,000 job opportunities in the country next year and the department was a part of it.
Rina said with the new intake of employees, issues such as child, social and moral protection would be solved and managed.
"We do not talk only ... we implement all the solutions to these issues." - NST
