Art exhibition celebrating Kit Siang’s life journey to be launched on March 28

 

In conjunction with DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang’s 80th birthday this year, an art exhibition that celebrates his up-and-down political journey will be launched on March 28.

Eighty renowned local artists have contributed 100 pieces of artworks to the “Siang project” which was initiated by Impian Theatre, a visual arts gallery to commemorate his birthday.

The exhibition is divided into six parts, including "Portrait gallery", "Origins", “Dream and Ideals", "Struggle and Sacrifices", "Hope and Triumphs", and "Work-in-progress", to provide a glance at Lim's life in different stages, including his political career, families and personal life trajectories.

The artists involved include Abdullah Jones, Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Calvin Chua, Cheong Tuck Wai, Gan Tee Sheng, Jeganathan Ramachandram, Khairuddin Zainudin, Kow Leong Kiang, Yuki Tham and so on.

DAP National Publicity Secretary Tony Pua has also contributed one art piece called “Sheraton Move”.

During a press conference after a press tour of the gallery on March 24, Lim reiterated that his dreams for more than half a century in politics have been for all the people in the country to have one common overriding identity as ‘Malaysian’.

“In the early decades of nationhood, it's understandable that the people will feel Malay first, Chinese first or Indian first, and Malaysian second; but after six decades of Malaysia nationhood, if the majority of Malaysian still think of themselves as ethnicity first, Malaysian nationality second, it's a failure of Malaysian nationhood.

“Malaysian first does not mean we will be less of a Malay, less of a Chinese, less of an Indian or Kadazan and so on. It does not mean we will be less of our religious identity as well.

“A loud and clear message in this gallery is that if Malaysia were to succeed, we must be united, we must find a formula to unite all Malaysian regardless of race and religion. That's my dream, and I believe that is the dream of all Malaysian as well.”

When asked about his future plan, Lim gave a brief answer, saying that the ‘new role’ is still in planning.

He said he would only announce whether to contest in the next general election at the right time.

On the possible cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and Umno, Lim reminded that the most important principle for all politicians in the ever-changing political scene is to stick to the goal of "fighting for the interests of the people".

“We should not (make decisions) just for the sake of gaining power or personal interest.”

“Siang Project” is set to be launched on March 28 at the Theatre Impian in Bukit Jalil, and will open to the public from March 31 onwards, every Tuesday to Friday, from 11am to 5pm. - Mkini
