Cinemas will reopen in conjunction with the country moving away from a full movement control order (MCO) that was first imposed on Jan 13 due to the rising numbers of Covid-19 cases.
The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia confirmed in a statement that cinemas will reopen on March 5.
This is subject to precautionary standard operating procedures (SOPs) including social distancing measures, temperature screening and regular sanitisation.
Beginning March 5, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang will join Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak and Perak under the conditional MCO.
Meanwhile, Malacca, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Putrajaya and Labuan will join Perlis under the recovery MCO.
Following the announcement, cinemas have begun advertising upcoming films.
“The moment we've been waiting for... we will be reopening this Friday.
“Stay tuned as we reveal our opening locations and confirmed movie line-ups,” it said in a Facebook post.
Meanwhile, TGV Cinemas initiated a survey seeking customers’ feedback on safety measures against Covid-19.
“Cinemas are coming soon. But to make it even safer and better for you, we would like to hear from you,” TGV Cinemas said in a Facebook post.
However, not all cinemas have survived tough times.
MBO Cinemas was on Feb 23 acquired by GSC after entering into a voluntary winding up.
GSC will acquire a majority of MBO Cinemas’ assets and the deal will be completed by June 2021.
The deal was struck just five days after MBO Cinemas made a post on Facebook pushing for the reopening of cinemas. - Mkini
