KUANTAN: Flash floods near Kampung Pandan 2 here, triggered by a heavy downpour, has forced 14 people from four families to seek shelter at the Pandan 1 multipurpose hall today.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the victims were moved to the evacuation centre after their homes were inundated at 11am.

"The department deployed a boat to bring out the victims whose homes were under 1m of water as a result by heavy rain. However, we are expecting more villagers to be evacuated within the next few hours.

"Some homes were inundated while some victims were moved as a precaution before floods struck their homes. Some village roads are partially submerged in floodwaters," he said when contacted.

Earlier today, firemen helped evacuate a woman in Kampung Pandan 2 after the victim's house compound came under 2m of water.

Firemen had deployed a boat during the 5.30am incident to send her to a relative's house.

The unexpected heavy downpour which ended the hot and dry spell here yesterday has raised concerns among those living in low-lying areas about possible recurrence of the monsoon floods which wreaked havoc in January.

Meanwhile in Jerantut, Sungai Tembeling at Kampung Bantal burst its banks before floodwaters hit eight wooden stalls located along the riverbank.

Villager Zulkefly Jamaludin, 33, said the flood warning siren alerted the villagers about 12.30am when the river water started to rise and submerged certain sections of the jetty, floating restaurants and wooden huts. - NST
