GEORGE TOWN: Frontliners around the country have started receiving their first jab of the Pfizer-BioNTech under Phase 1 of the national Covid-19 immunisation programme.
In Penang, a total of 464 city council enforcement officers were inoculated, with 249 from the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and 215 are from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“The Penang government urges all Malaysians to register for the vaccination programme as soon as possible so that we can win the battle against Covid-19,” state housing, local government and town and country planning committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said, adding that he himself has already taken his vaccine shot at Jalan Angsana Health Clinic in Ayer Itam.
On March 2, Jagdeep had urged the federal government to give local government staff the eligibility to be vaccinated under Phase 1.
He argued that the enforcement officers have been on the ground to check on premises to ensure that the standard operating procedures (SOP) are strictly followed.
On March 3, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the issue has been raised in the National Security Council (MKN) meeting, and it was unanimously agreed by the committee to give priority for city council enforcement officers under Phase 1.
In Sandakan in Sabah, a total of 1,050 health and non-health frontliners in Sandakan began receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine shots at the Duchess of Kent Hospital, here.
According to Sandakan district health officer Dr Johari Awang Besar, the number involved 90 health workers while another 480 health workers will receive their jabs tomorrow.
“Meanwhile, 480 non-health frontliners are scheduled to receive the vaccine shots on Sunday ,” he said when met by reporters today.
Dr Johari, who also received the vaccine today, said the Sandakan district health office targeted more than 80 per cent of Sandakan residents to be vaccinated.
“I hope the community is not afraid to get this vaccination shot. It doesn’t hurt and the process (the jab) is quick,” he added. - FMT
