The government will allow the operation of Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars as well as Terawih prayers during the upcoming fasting month with strict compliance to the standard operating procedures (SOPs), said Senior Minister (Security) Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
This came as various trader and hawker associations urged the government to give the green light to Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars this year as they were not allowed to carry out business last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ismail said the bazaars must be held in the open-air spaces and have separate one-way routes for entering and exiting.
"Ramadan bazaars are allowed to operate between 3pm and 8pm while the Aidilfitri bazaars can open from 10am to 12am," he told a press conference today.
The bazaar venues will be determined by the respective local authorities, he said.
"Meanwhile, the special technical meeting today also agreed for the Terawih prayers to be held at mosques and surau all over the country," he said.
Ismail said state religious authorities will determine the number of attendees at the mosques and surau.
It was reported that several states have allowed the operation of Ramadan bazaars this year, pending approval from the National Security Council.
