Pakatan Harapan's students' wing has demanded Putrajaya to come clean on the computer scheme and RM100 e-wallet handouts which were promised in Budget 2021.
In a statement today, Mahasiswa Harapan said the rollout was supposed to take place in February but nothing has been heard since.
It also accused the government of not being transparent about the penalties involved in the scheme.
"We demand to know why the government was not transparent about this scheme which comes with a RM300 fine if the devices are damaged.
"This scheme will add burden on students who are already in a difficult situation due to the economy," said the group.
According to Budget 2021, government-linked companies (GLCs) are compelled to contribute 150,000 laptops or tablets to students under the "Cerdik initiative".
These devices were supposed to aid needy students to cope with distance learning requirements caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the "Cerdik Initiative" website, only students from selected schools in Kedah, Klang Valley, Johor, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak will benefit.
Previously, the "Cerdik Initiative" website had stipulated a RM300 fine for damaging the loaned computers on the FAQ section.
That section has since been updated and now states that a "minimum payment" is expected in case of damage or loss of the devices.
"This is to encourage proper use of the devices," read the website. - Mkini
