Johor PKR apologises to Tebrau voters after MP jumps ship to PN

Johor PKR has apologised to voters in Tebrau, after their MP Steven Choong defected from PKR to back Perikatan Nasional (PN).

State party chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said there's no excuse for betraying the people's mandate.

"Betraying the people's mandate is unreasonable for any reason.

"Obtaining the support of MPs through threats, promise of positions or gains while in power and such, should be condemned," he said in a statement today.

Ibrahim added that baiting MPs to switch sides can also be considered a form of corruption.

Choong together with Julau MP Larry Sng defected from PKR and declared their support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin-led PN on Saturday.

The move could give PN the number it needs to maintain a simple majority in the Dewan Rakyat - unless more Umno leaders turn away from them.

News of Choong and Sng's defections came a day after it was revealed that three Johor Amanah assemblypersons had left the party and joined PKR.

The move has been panned by Amanah and DAP, who are PKR allies in Pakatan Harapan.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim said with Choong out of the party, the Tebrau PKR division will step up efforts to aid the people, especially in facing Covid-19.

He added that they will be preparing for the next general election as well. - Mkini
