Sarawak village to go under EMCO

The EMCO at Kg Serumah Daerah Kecil Siburan in Siburan, Sarawak, became necessary due to a spike in Covid-19 cases there.

PETALING JAYA: Kg Serumah Daerah Kecil Siburan in Siburan, Sarawak, will be placed under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from tomorrow until March 20 after a spike in cases in the area.

In a statement today, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the health ministry had reported a spike in Covid-19 cases in the locality — with 21 of the 416 Covid-19 tests taken from residents in the area returning positive.

Ismail said the EMCO will allow the health ministry to conduct a targeted screening of the 580 residents in the locality as well as contact tracing.

Meanwhile, Ismail announced that the EMCO at the Central Medicare glove factory, its staff quarters and a construction site in Hilir Perak, Perak, would end tomorrow as scheduled.

He said 1,650 of the 2,074 Covid tests conducted in the locality had returned positive. The health ministry has confirmed a downward trend in new positive cases from the area.

Ismail also said police arrested 205 people yesterday over MCO-related offences.

Of that number, 193 were slapped with compound fines, nine remanded and three others granted bail.

Among the offences were failure to wear a face mask, failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration, and crossing districts or states without permission.

A total of 3,292 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 21,494 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, among other places.

Ismail also said police arrested 22 illegal immigrants and seized six vehicles and two boats under the ongoing Op Benteng.

He added that 137,581 passengers had arrived through KLIA between July 24 last year and March 5 this year from various countries.

A total of 882 people tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, 129,348 were allowed to return home and 7,351 are currently undergoing mandatory quarantine. - FMT
