Tamrin faces up to a year's jail over criticism of Johor crown prince

Tamrin Abdul Ghafar, son of the late deputy prime minister Abdul Ghafar Baba, faces up to a year in prison over a blog post criticising Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Tamrin (photo, above) was charged this morning at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

If found guilty, he can be sentenced to up to a year in prison, or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both.

Section 233(1)(a) concerns the improper use of network facilities in relation to communication that is obscene, indecent, false, menacing, or offensive in character with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass another person.

He was charged before Sessions Court judge Wan Mohd Norisham Wan Yaakob.

Tamrin, in his blog post dated Feb 2 last year, took issue with Tunku Ismail's criticism of then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and also called him unflattering names that referenced his physical appearance.

The blog post was also circulated on his Facebook page.

The court set bail at RM8,000. Case management was set for May 23.

Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali represented Tamrin while the prosecution was represented by Yusaini Amir Abdul Karim and Tengku Amir Zaki Tengku Abdul Rahman. - Mkini
