MELAKA: The rise in sexual crimes involving minors and secondary school students in the state is disturbing as it involves even those as young as 15 years old, Melaka police chief Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said.
What was more worrying, he said, was that some of the youngsters would even rent an apartment or book a hotel room to engage in sexual acts and share their sexual experience openly with friends via mobile phones.
He said that in the first three months of this year, five such cases were recorded. Throughout last year, 69 cases were reported.
“We are worried about the increase in sexual crime in Melaka. Therefore, we urge parents to monitor their children’s movement and behaviour so that they don’t get involved in promiscuity that will affect their future,” he told reporters after attending the 214th Police Day parade at the Melaka Police Contingent headquarters here today.
Abdul Majid said the police are now engaging in strategic partnerships with the Police Retiree Association and non-governmental organisations in the state to take proactive measures to curb immoral activities among youngsters.
In the meantime, he said Melaka police had also taken several initiatives to bring their personnel closer to the community for crime prevention purposes since December last year. - FMT
