Anti-emergency committee hopes palace will set date for audience

The opposition committee lobbying for an end to the state of emergency hopes Istana Negara can set a date for an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

This came as a follow-up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s senior private secretary’s letter to the committee on April 20, stating that the king was prepared to meet them to receive a memorandum calling for an end to the emergency.

Khairuddin Abu Hassan, a committee member of the panel, said he hoped the Agong could consent to a suitable date for the meeting.

“The audience is essential to explain to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong about the people’s feelings amid the Covid-19 disaster, economic collapse and political instability,” he said.

The emergency took effect on Jan 11 and was announced on Jan 12. Following the announcement, Parliament was suspended.

Putrajaya said the emergency was necessary to combat Covid-19 but critics claimed it was an attempt by the government to cling to power amid an uncertain majority.

Since the emergency was announced, the Covid-19 death toll had increased from 559 to 2,149 yesterday, while cumulative cases increased from 141,533 to 498,795 in the same period.

Khairuddin said Parliament is the symbol of democracy and other countries did not stop their Parliament from convening even if they declare an emergency against Covid-19.

He added that the rulers are the people’s last hope. - Mkini
