Brickbats for Nik Abduh after telling donors not to ask hard questions

PAS central committee member Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz has received brickbats after he suggested people donating to the relief effort in Palestine should not ask difficult questions about whether the money reaches its destination.

In a Facebook post titled: "Donation does not reach Palestine?", he said what mattered most was one's sincerity.

"Don't trouble yourselves by asking difficult matters," Abduh (above) said.

However, several commenters disagreed with him.

"If this is coming from a donor, perhaps it is acceptable. But if this is coming from someone who is collecting donations, it is quite inappropriate," said Afyan Mat Rawi.

"Scammers could take advantage by using the same argument and normalise such practises," Afyan pointed out.

Facebook user Syarif Hasbullah said: "Malaysians donate to benefit themselves and the people of Palestine. Not the people who collect the donation. Do you understand?"

Another user sarcastically suggested that he too was planning to set up a fund for Palestine.

"I would like to set up a fund too. Don't ask if I deliver the money (to Palestine)," said Ibnu Ahmad.

Fresh fighting has erupted between Israel and Palestine after the Israeli police stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a major Islamic holy site in Jerusalem.

Palestinian combatants have fired rockets at Israel while Israel has launched airstrikes on Palestine.

To date, 10 people have died on the Israeli side while 139 have been killed on the Palestinian side.

PAS, in cooperation with some 40 NGOs, launched the #Aid4Palestine fund with the goal of raising RM1 million for Palestinians.

The formation of the fund and its secretariat was announced by special ambassador to the Middle East, Abdul Hadi Awang. His son, Muhammad Khalil, is the secretariat's chairperson.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan on Friday also ordered all levels of his party to mobilise and raise funds for #Aid4Palestine.

However, the funds are being channelled to Tabung Kemanusiaan PASRelief - an account under the political party. - Mkini
