Cops summon Mkini reporters to help in probe on Hamid Bador revelations

Police have recorded the statements of two Malaysiakini staff regarding allegations made by Abdul Hamid Bador in his last press conference as the inspector-general of police (IGP) in Bukit Aman, on April 30.

Malaysiakini Bahasa Malaysia desk editor Jimadie Shah Othman was questioned for about three hours starting at 11.30am while KiniTV broadcast journalist Vivian Yap spoke to the police for about two hours.

The statement was recorded by ASP Zaharin Abd Rahman and SMD Zulsyarizwan Zulkefli from the Special Operations Division (D8), Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department at the Putra Perdana police station, Puchong.

Jimadie and Yap were among those questioned about the content of Hamid’s press conference, the attendance at the event, and details of the news reports and video broadcasts carried by Malaysiakini and KiniTV.

Hamid in the press conference raised allegations of political interference in the police force, corruption in politics and delivered a stinging rebuke to Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin.

Malaysiakini was not informed of what section the investigation was under.

On May 6, the new IGP, who is also Hamid’s successor, Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, said police would open an inquiry paper (internal investigation) into Hamid’s allegations, following six police reports that were lodged nationwide.

Acryl Sani said, after the evidence is collected, police will seek the advice of the Attorney-General’s Office to determine what section under which to continue the investigation.

“Usually, for offences of alleged abuse of power or corruption, the matter involves an investigation by the MACC.

“However, we will continue to investigate the matter,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

Malaysiakini understands that the investigation is still at an early stage.

Police did not disclose whether Hamid and Hamzah would be called to testify. - Mkini
