United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) and Sabah DAP today demanded that the authorities probe damning allegations by former inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador.
The two key issues which need to be probed, said the two parties, were Hamid's allegation of political corruption among lawmakers who defect, as well as allegations that Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin was interfering in police affairs.
These demands were jointly made in a police report filed by Upko vice-president Ewon Benedick and Sabah DAP Youth chief Phoong Jin Zhe in Kota Kinabalu today. They are the Kadamaian and Luyang state assemblypersons, respectively.
In a joint statement, the duo said Malaysia deserves a police service which prioritises the people and not serving the ruling party's interest.
"Therefore, we, together with the people, especially in the constituency that we represent, demand a full investigation into Hamid's disclosure and demand the truth from the government," said the duo.
Sabah has seen a long list of defections following the 2018 general election. The first wave of defections allowed a Warisan-led coalition to form a government.
The second wave in July last year led to the dissolution of the Sabah legislative assembly and a fresh election, which was won convincingly by Perikatan Nasional.
Meanwhile, Phoong told reporters what Hamid revealed was not new to opposition parties in Sabah.
"Many of my colleagues lodged police reports after certain political agents approached and offered to defect for monetary benefits.
"The police must investigate and reveal the truth to the public," he said.
Phoong added that the allegations by Hamid have to be taken seriously because they came from a former IGP.
Apart from internal investigations, Phoon said the government should also establish a royal commission of inquiry and go through with the proposal to set up the Independent Police Complaints of Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) as a long-term solution.
Last Friday, Hamid held a tell-all press conference where he accused Hamzah of meddling with the promotion of senior police personnel and that there was blatant corruption in the spate of defections by lawmakers.
Hamid also later claimed that Hamzah had attempted to use the Special Branch for political purposes. - Mkini
