The National Blood Centre has appealed for donors to come forward as its supplies run low and noted that the people are avoiding public places amid the surge in Covid-19 cases.
In a Facebook post last night, it said its stocks were “very low” since last week and noted that the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays are just around the corner.
“After a week of begging and waiting, blood stocks are still very low. Help patients who need it,” it said in a poster published on its Facebook post last night.
It indicated that supplies of type AB blood are at safe levels, but it is running low on type A.
Meanwhile, supplies are also very low for type B and type O blood.
It urged eligible donors to come to the nearest blood donation centres. An appointment slip can be obtained from its website to ensure a smooth journey amid travel restrictions due to the movement control order.
For those ineligible to donate blood, it urged them to share the information. For the record, those who have recently been vaccinated are required to postpone their blood donation for at least one week.
The one week period starts from the time the vaccine is taken if they don’t have any mild side effects, or after they have recovered if they did have any mild side effects.
In an earlier post that day, the National Blood Centre also shared its disappointment in the lack of people turning up for its blood donation drives.
It said its donation drive at an unnamed mall only managed to collect one bag of blood by 1pm.
“Sadness. That is how we feel right now. Up to 1pm, only one bag of blood has been collected at this location.
“Help us. Come donate blood to help patients who need it.
“Help us. Come forward to donate blood,” it said.
A list of blood donation centres and mobile blood donation drives in the Klang Valley can be found here. Those outside the Klang Valley can refer to the blood donation centres in their respective states.
